Fire Destroys Cobalt Apartments Building, Displaces About 400 Wesley Chapel Residents

WESLEY CHAPEL / PASCO COUNTY, FL — A fast-moving fire destroys Cobalt apartments building off Wesley Chapel Boulevard on Thursday afternoon, leaving hundreds of neighbors without a home just hours after it started.

Pasco County Fire Rescue crews responded to the 3900 block of Jermyn Loop around 3 p.m. after receiving calls about a structure fire. What they found was a roof already heavily engulfed in flames.

How It Happened

Fire Chief Ryan Guynn said crews arrived to find the building's roof fully involved, with video released by Pasco Fire Rescue showing flames and dark smoke pouring out along the entire length of the structure. The department quickly elevated the response to a three-alarm fire, bringing in help from Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and Tampa Fire Rescue to get it under control.

Guynn described the damage as severe — the heavy fire load caused multiple floors and sections of the roof to collapse in on themselves, with damage reaching down into portions of the first floor. Officials have since declared the wood-frame building, which held roughly 90 units, a total loss. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported, though a few firefighters were treated on scene for heat exhaustion before returning to duty.

How Crews Responded

Guynn said firefighters made it a priority to account for every resident before doing anything else. "We went door to door and made sure all the complexes were empty prior to moving on and looking for pets," he told reporters Thursday evening.

That door-to-door effort paid off — crews also rescued dozens of pets from the building, though Guynn noted some animals may not have survived. Fire crews kept the blaze contained to the single structure, preventing it from spreading to neighboring buildings, and remained on scene through the night working to extinguish hot spots.

With roughly 90 units affected, Pasco County Fire Rescue estimates about 400 residents have been displaced — a significant hit to a fast-growing community where apartment living has become a major part of the housing mix. The American Red Cross and Pasco County Emergency Management are on scene helping displaced residents connect with shelter, food and other resources, and the complex itself is accepting donations for those affected.

Crews are expected to remain at the site for several days as they continue clearing the wreckage.
