Pasco Approves $235 Million for Hurricane Recovery and Storm-Hardening Projects

WESLEY CHAPEL / PASCO COUNTY, FL — More than two years after Hurricanes Idalia, Helene and Milton battered the region, Pasco County is putting real money behind long-term storm recovery. County commissioners have approved approximately $235 million for the Better Future Infrastructure and Mitigation Program, funding repairs to storm-hardening projects and infrastructure while preparing the county against future hurricanes.

How the County Decided Where the Money Goes

Deciding where the funding should go took more than looking at a map, according to Pasco Better Future Programs manager Tim Lagudi. The county studied storm damage data and met with residents and local leaders to identify the greatest unmet needs before finalizing the funding plan. "We looked at the data and the data told us a lot about what the county needed, whether it was housing or infrastructure or business or any other type of service," Lagudi said.

What the Funding Covers

The program addresses regional drainage, road safety, and septic-to-sewer line conversions, along with hardening local public facilities and transit evacuation centers against future storms. Active projects already underway include renovation work at the Hudson Library.

The funding comes from Pasco County's broader $585.7 million Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery allocation from HUD, awarded in January 2025 to help the county recover from the 2023-2024 hurricane season.

The Clock Is Already Running

The county has five years to complete these projects or risk losing some of the funding, meaning work is expected to move quickly despite this hurricane season being relatively quiet so far.

Why It Matters for Wesley Chapel

While much of the highlighted project activity so far is centered in west Pasco communities like Hudson, this is countywide infrastructure funding, meaning Wesley Chapel's drainage, road and public facility projects are eligible for support as the program rolls out. For a fast-growing area that's added significant housing and traffic in recent years, stronger stormwater and evacuation infrastructure benefits residents well beyond the specific project sites announced so far.
