Pasco County School Board Set to Vote on $17 Million Property Tax Increase Tuesday
WESLEY CHAPEL / PASCO COUNTY, FL — Pasco County homeowners will get their final chance to speak Tuesday before the Pasco County School Board votes on a 2026-27 property tax increase that would raise the district's levy by roughly $17 million.
The final public hearing and vote is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the district's boardroom at 7205 Land O' Lakes Blvd.
For families in Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass Ranch, the decision comes as the district continues adding students in some of its fastest-growing areas while cutting positions elsewhere.
Property Tax Increase: What the Board Is Voting On
The school board adopted tentative millage rates in July that would bring the district's property tax levy to approximately $436.6 million, compared with about $419.6 million for the previous year.
That represents an increase of roughly $17 million in the total levy.
The proposed rates include an operating millage of 4.684 mills and a capital outlay millage of 1.5 mills.
For perspective, the district estimates that a home with a taxable value of $350,000 after the homestead exemption would generate about $2,010 in school property taxes under the proposed rates.
The final vote is required before the new budget and millage rates can take effect.
A Different Budget Picture Across Pasco
The tax increase comes against a complicated backdrop for Pasco schools.
The district is eliminating the equivalent of 476 full-time positions as part of its 2026-27 budget, even as some parts of the county continue to experience significant enrollment growth.
Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass Ranch remain among the areas where school capacity is under the most pressure, with new residential development continuing to add potential students.
The district is also separately pursuing changes to its school concurrency rules that would make it harder for new housing projects to move forward when nearby schools are already overcrowded.
What's Also on Tuesday's Agenda
The board's agenda includes several other items affecting Pasco schools.
Wesley Chapel High School and Wiregrass Ranch High School each received approval for $750 in petty cash funds as part of a $12,500 districtwide allocation.
The board has also approved federal grants supporting school technology and communications, special education programs and services for high-poverty schools and English Language Learners.

The tax vote comes at a time when Wesley Chapel is facing two competing pressures: continued development and the need for additional school capacity.
The district has already warned that thousands of students could eventually come from housing projects that have been approved but not yet fully built.
