Pasco School District Adopts $2.3B Final Budget, Lowers Tax Rate Slightly

WESLEY CHAPEL / PASCO COUNTY, FL — The Pasco School District has closed the books on its 2026-27 budget, and homeowners will see a small break on their school tax bill even as the district's overall spending grows. The school board unanimously adopted the final budget last week, totaling approximately $2.327 billion, up 0.9% from last year.

What's in the Budget

The combined school property tax rate falls from 6.274 to 6.184 mills, a drop driven entirely by a reduction in the state-required portion of the rate — the voter-approved local salary tax and capital-project tax rates remain completely unchanged. For a home with an assessed value of $350,000 and a $25,000 homestead exemption, the district calculates a school tax bill of $2,009.80, down $29.25 from last year, assuming the home's assessed value stays the same.

The budget also expands funding tied to Florida's school choice programs, with $87.6 million allocated for scholarships and $130.9 million for charter schools. District officials note those dollars pass through the district as part of the state's expanded school choice system but aren't spent on traditional public schools.

The General Fund, which covers daily operations, totals $1.18 billion for the year, an increase of $51.6 million, with district officials attributing $31.4 million of that growth directly to rising Family Empowerment Scholarship and charter-school funding. General Fund spending is budgeted at $991.2 million against $980.7 million in revenue, a gap expected to shrink the district's fund balance from $198.6 million to $188 million by June 30, 2027.

The capital-project budget totals $613.4 million, down $33 million from last year.

Why It Matters for Wesley Chapel

For Wesley Chapel families, the modest tax rate decrease offers some relief even as growth-driven pressure on schools continues in the area. With enrollment concentrated in fast-growing corridors like Wesley Chapel and Wiregrass Ranch, how the district balances its capital and operating dollars in the years ahead will keep shaping decisions on new schools, rezoning and classroom capacity.
