According to Clearwater Fire & Rescue, crews responded to eight water rescues Tuesday and five more by Wednesday afternoon, as persistent winds and tropical activity in the Gulf continue producing rough surf and hazardous rip currents. Red flags are currently flying at Clearwater Beach, signaling that swimming is not advised.

Officials are asking beachgoers to swim only near a staffed lifeguard tower, pay close attention to posted warning flags, and avoid entering the water at all while red flags are displayed. The high rip current risk is expected to remain in effect through Thursday evening.
