TAMPA BAY, FL — Tampa Bay's second major airport is gearing up for its biggest transformation in decades, and if you haven't considered flying out of St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) before, this might be the moment to start paying attention.
The St. Pete-Clearwater Airport is looking to move forward with an expansion and renovation project after officials scrapped a previous attempt in 2025 when costs exceeded the budget. Now officials are trying again while also attempting to increase funding.
"The airport has changed dramatically," said Mark Sprague, the director of the St. Pete-Clearwater Airport. "Passenger traffic has increased over 67% in the last five years. Operational and regulatory requirements have expanded. Our facilities are continuing to age."

he project calls for renovations of gates two through six, modernizing the hold room with new flooring, seating, lighting, and passenger amenities, plus a new security checkpoint with new queuing and exit lane technology.
Beyond aesthetics, the infrastructure underneath is getting a serious upgrade too. The airport's sewage system — still running on original pipes from the 1950s and 1960s in three sections — will be fully replaced.
The long-term vision is significant. Officials plan to expand capacity up to 4.5 million passengers in the current footprint by expanding into a pier concept. Once that new concept is in place, the plan calls for building a 40,000-square-foot elevated terminal with four to five new jet bridges.
The Timeline
Pinellas County commissioners could approve the $145 million project budget as early as September 2026. If funding is approved, officials plan to have designs completed by June 2027, with full construction wrapping up by 2032.
